Fred Whitton Challenge Chatbot Goes Live
By Alessandro Botticelli -- April 06, 2018
The Fred Whitton Challenge consists of a 112 mile charity sportive around the Lake District. As the name suggests, it is run in honour of Fred Whitton, who died aged just 50 in 1998 and was an extremely popular member of the Lakes Road Club.
The event is renowned as one of the most challenging sportives, attracting over 2,000 participants annually and consistently becoming oversubscribed each year.
About the Chatbot
The organisation launched an automated assistant chatbot this year to support event management. The system responds to inquiries through Facebook Messenger, delivering event information round-the-clock to reduce organiser workload.
Capabilities include allowing participants to retrieve historical event times from previous years, access weather forecasts, review event facts and tips, and obtain critical safety information. The development team trained the bot to respond intelligently to typical participant questions, enabling it to address over 90 separate inquiry types successfully.
The team appreciated collaborating on this charitable event project and credited strong input from event coordinators with improving the bot's effectiveness.
