What's The Difference Between ChatGPT & GPT3?
By Alessandro Botticelli -- February 11, 2023
Since the launch of ChatGPT at the end of November 2022, numerous solutions have hit the market claiming to be ChatGPT-branded. But many are actually GPT-3 implementations.
ChatGPT confusion is rife. At the time of writing, numerous solutions have hit the market claiming to be ChatGPT-branded, but are they really? Let's clear up the difference between ChatGPT and GPT-3.
So, What's The Difference Between ChatGPT & GPT3?
GPT-3 is a Large Language Model released by OpenAI in June 2020, later improved as GPT-3.5 (also known as InstructGPT). ChatGPT underwent additional training on top of GPT-3.5, including Reinforcement Learning from Human Feedback (RLHF), where humans reviewed and rewrote model responses for accuracy and conversational quality.
OpenAI employed Proximal Policy Optimization to create safer, more useful responses. Despite ChatGPT's foundation in GPT-3.5, it produces superior conversational responses due to this specialised training process.
What Can You Do With GPT3?
GPT-3's API enables a broad range of applications: text generation, question answering, chatbot development, language translation, content summarisation, code generation, and creative projects across music, visual arts, and game design.
What Can You Do With ChatGPT?
ChatGPT excels at question answering, conversation simulation, text generation, summarisation, and translation through its browser-based interface. It has been optimised specifically for human-like conversational interactions.
Summary
ChatGPT is a conversational browser interface built on GPT-3.5 without public API access (at the time of writing). GPT-3.5 remains API-accessible and can be used to create ChatGPT-like experiences when enhanced with memory and domain-specific knowledge.
